The Mary Rose Museum launches new app

The Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth’s historic dockyard has launched a new app to enhance the visitor experience.

The app, developed by Mobidaze Ltd, uses geo-fencing technology to identify when users are in the dockyard and notifies them of any events and talks taking place during their visit.

Guests using the app will have access to a number of different features to enhance their experience, including an audio tour of the museum. The tour is currently available in English, French, German, Polish, Spanish, Italian and Japanese, with more languages expected to be added throughout 2017.

The app also features: museum maps, information about Henry VIII, large print versions of museum text for the visually impaired and highlights specific exhibits selected by the museum’s experts.

The app is the latest in a line of new developments at the museum, others include: guided tours and meet the crew/meet the expert talks.

Paul Griffiths, head of operations at the Mary Rose Museum, said: “We are immensely proud to be the custodians of the country’s most historic treasures, and we also love mixing the old with the new. This app is the perfect way to harness new technologies to help today’s visitor get the most out of their visit.”

Adrian Stokes of Mobidaze said: “We very much enjoyed working with the Mary Rose management and marketing teams to publish a mobile app that will enhance the visitor experience, using the one device they never leave home without.”

The app is available on both iOS and Android devices and is free to download from maryrose.org/download
